What is a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP)?
A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is a tailored plan designed for individuals who may need assistance to evacuate a building safely during an emergency.
When is a PEEP needed
You should request a PEEP if you:
Why is it important?
A PEEP ensures:
What should you do?
If you think you need a PEEP, contact the Disability Service team as soon as possible. They will work with you to create a plan that meets your needs.
These are individual plans designed to help people who may need assistance during an emergency evacuation, such as a fire or other incident. This can be long or short term.
Should you be in accommodation you will be signposted to the accommodation team where they will arrange a PEEP in conjunction with the Fire Manager.
Short-Term Issues
These are temporary conditions that affect a person’s ability to evacuate safely. Examples include:
Someone with a broken leg or recovering from surgery.
A pregnant employee in later stages.
Key point: The PEEP is needed only for the duration of the condition. Once the person recovers, the plan can be removed.
Long-Standing Issues
These are permanent or ongoing conditions that require continuous support. Examples include:
People with mobility impairments (wheelchair users).
Individuals with visual or hearing impairments.
Those with chronic health conditions that affect evacuation.
Key point:
The PEEP remains in place indefinitely and should be reviewed regularly.
Self Evacuation Lifts
It’s important to understand why these lifts differ to standard lifts.
During a fire alarm, a standard lift will automatically lower to the ground floor and not beavailable, whereas self- evacuation lifts remain operational during emergencies to support safe evacuation. If the detection is too close to the lift, it will not be active, and you will need to go to the Refuge Point. To access the lifts you will have to complete a personal emergency evacuation plan with Disability Services, this identifies the level of support you need so the university can put measures in place.
